Local Topography

Notes:

The local topography also plays a key role. Wind that has flowed across the ocean has had a chance to become a very uniform flow. The technical term for this is laminar.

When this even wind flow hits the coastal mountains it become turbulent again. The peak that is directly hit by the laminar flow still enjoys a rather smooth air flow, but the valley on the other side the airflow becomes turbulent.

This is why some of the sites in the area (e.g. Fremont Peak and Montebello OSP) are known for their good seeing.
