I acquired the most recent update to Adobe Acrobat, version 5.0, to create the PDF file this time. Let me know how it goes. I may go back and distill the previous issues -- maybe it will clear up some of the problems I've had. http://ephemeris.sjaa.net/ Best regards, Mojo -- Morris Jones <*> San Rafael, CA mojo@whiteoaks.com http://www.whiteoaks.com From mojo at whiteoaks.com Tue Jul 3 10:38:04 2001 From: mojo at whiteoaks.com (Morris Jones) Date: Fri Jul 29 03:57:03 2005 Subject: [SJAA-announce] sjaa.net down, back up Message-ID: Sorry! In-Reply-To: Message-ID: This is just a reminder that the Houge Park Star Party is tonight, Friday, July 13th. There will be a large group of scouts attending, so if you have no plans for this evening please bring your scope and share the wonders of the night sky. Sunset is at 8:25 PM with Astronomical Twilight at 9:30 PM. Unfortunately, the Observational Astronomy class scheduled for tonight is cancelled since the instructor who was originally penciled in could not attend due to other plans (and I neglected to find a replacement when I went to Africa). The next class will be August 10, on Meteor Observing taught by me, in time for the Persieds. We will schedule the Wonders of the Milky Way class for a later date. This is a Minuteman II ICBM launch to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands to test a Exoatmosphic Kill Vehicle as part of the continuing test of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. These launches are easy to spot from the greater bay area. From San Jose, look to the south - southeast or using a compass look to 158 degrees (use a map to determine the look angle for a different location). Make sure to have a clear horizon to maximize your viewing time but these ballistic tests get up to 30 degrees over our horizon. (The site is apparently run by VAFB's Maintenance and Ops Coordination Center. The web page's forecaster/web administrator would only confirm that the launch schedule would not be covering this particular launch. He refused to elaborate further. Very odd.) In any event, according to the DoD press release, the launch window is between 7PM and 10PM on Saturday evening, July 14. That's tomorrow. (Sunset is shortly after 8PM.) The launch vehicle is a Minuteman II. The Minuteman's solid rocket motor generates a very visible exhaust, and if the launch takes place around sunset, it can be a spectacular sight. According to Brian Webb, if you're in the general vicinity of Santa Barbara/VAFB/etc., you may be able to get updates from KEYT-TV channel 3, or KEYT-AM 1250. Hams can follow the launch via the VAFB launch net, starting at 6:30 PM on the WB6OOB repeater at 147.000 MHz, which apparently has coverage from San Luis Obispo to right here in San Diego. Dang, I may have to dig out my 2 meter handie-talkie! If you have little to do tomorrow evening, you might just set your lawn chair out, and keep an eye on the skies above northern VAFB. The trajectory will be to the west southwest, as the vehicle lobs its dummy warhead and decoys towards Kwajalein Atoll. The goal is for the kill vehicle, which is launched around 20 minutes later, to distinguish the warhead from the decoys, and to physically ram the warhead, rendering it incapable of detonation. More details are available at http://www.acq.osd.mil/bmdo . That's the theory, anyway. I will refrain from any political comments regarding this program. Send in your observation reports, and I'll be happy to publish them on the SkyLights web site. Let's go do it! If we have 10 people, we'll get on-the-air credit. I'm not certain just what that will be, but that's less important; we want to support their efforts. Do you know of another TV station that has a weekly Science Night? Reply to me, , and I'll keep the list, try to answer questions, and pass along any information received from KTEH. I've done this a couple times. It's hard work, but it's fun, and it's interesting to see the inside of the place. It's a very noisy room, so I suggest one earplug for the ear that's not used with the phone. I brought along my old operator's headset and that was a big help. The room gets warm, so you will want to dress lightly. There'll be a little training session, then we're on the air for under 2 hours in roughly 20 minute segments. Emily Juan, the volunteer coordinator for KTEH, writes that during this shift, Best of Cosmos and Odyssey: The Mind's Eye will be showing for approximately 3 hours. We'd be able to watch the outgoing program, of course. We'd also get fed (it was spaghetti a few years ago) during one of the program segments. Navigational twilight (start observing clusters) 9:24 pm, Moonset at 1:04 a.m. Weather prospects: it was clear last night at 11 pm, mostly cloudy at 1 am. There is no astronomy class tonight.
