Meeting and Holiday Party this Sat. Dec. 6th! Message-ID: A) General Meeting: Dr. Jeffery Moore on Pluto Mission on Sat. Dec 6, 8PM B) Holiday Party after General Meeting on Dec. 6th C) SJAA Logo Wear Available for the Holidays! D) Board Meeting before General Meeting on Sat. Dec 6th 6:30 PM *************************************************** A) General Meeting: Dr. Jeffery Moore on Pluto Mission on Sat. Dec 6, 8PM The San Jose Astronomical Association Presents Dr. Jeffrey M. Moore, Research Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center Speaking on "The New Horizons Pluto-Kuiper Belt Mission" Saturday December 6th starting at 8 PM in Houge Park Building 1 The New Horizons Pluto-Kuiper Belt mission is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon a "double planet" system and the last in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft. The mission would then visit one or more Kuiper Belt Objects, in the region beyond Neptune. New Horizons is scheduled to launch in January 2006, swing past Jupiter for a gravity boost and scientific studies in February 2007, and reach Pluto and its moon, Charon, in July 2015. Then the spacecraft would head deeper into the Kuiper Belt to study one or more of the icy mini-worlds in that vast region, at least a billion miles beyond Neptune's orbit. Sending a spacecraft on this long journey could help us answer basic questions about these bodies surface properties, geology, interior makeup, and atmospheres. Dr. Jeffrey M. Moore is a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. His research has focused on a range of topics relating to the geologic evolution of planetary landscapes and crustal materials. He has conducted extensive laboratory simulations of Martian geologic processes and over the past year has conducted research on the implications of impact craters on Europa for a sub-surface ocean. Dr. Moore is Project Scientist of the Carl Sagan Center, to be located at Ames Research Center. He is imaging node leader for NASA's New Horizons Pluto-Kuiper Belt Mission. Jeffrey is also a SJAA Member and often attends our meetings and observing events. As usual, everyone is invited to attend, no membership required. See below for directions. Bring your favorite desert or appetizer to share. Last year we had many tasty "potluck" contributions. Contributions of food or drink are appreciated but not necessary. No alcohol, please. If you would like to display a piece of unique astro equipment, an astro photo, new software, or other such item, please bring it along. Well try running a "white elephant" gift drawing this year as we had done in years past. To participate, please anonymously wrap (no name tag) an astronomical item of small value and/or large humor and bring it along. It can be a used item you no longer want, an inexpensive new item, and can be either useful or funny. We'll do the exchange as a "draw or steal" lottery, which is always great fun. Happy Holidays to All! *************************************************** C) SJAA Logo Wear Available for the Holidays! Looking for that perfect gift for your favorite astronomer? The SJAA is proud to present SJAA Logo Wear from Fairview Embroidery. You can get Baseball Caps, T-Shirts, and Polar Fleece Pull Overs with full or 1/4 zippers all embroidered with SJAA Logo. You also can have the item personalized with you name for an additional cost. To order, go to the Fairview Embroidery website at http://www.fairviewembroidery.com/pages/671642/index.htm Delivery is free at any Houge event since I work with Kurt. It takes about 2 weeks for an order to arrive, so plan accordingly for a holiday delivery. Show pride in your club and keep warm observing this winter with SJAA Logowear! BTW, the orders made during the swap have come in and will be delivered at the General Meeting on Saturday. For those of you considering purchasing one, you have another opportunity to look over the items before you order. *************************************************** D) Board Meeting before General Meeting on Sat. Dec 6th 6:30 PM The Board of Directors meets starting at 6:30 in the hall at Houge Park. Learn how the club operates and help contribute to its success. The entire month of January at the Exploratorium is dedicated to this Mars exploration < from the first Spirit images webcast from the Exploratorium, to visitor-controlled robots that can go on missions in "Mars yards" in the museum, to a full-scale model of MER, as well as almost daily in-museum events/webcasts and special weekend programs and films. Go to: http://www.exploratorium.edu/pr/documents/04-1Overview.html Journey to Mars Weekend Special Events January 3, 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24 & 25 As robotic rovers begin to explore the Martian terrain in January 2004, the Exploratorium offers zany and substantive special weekend events designed to bring the distant red planet and the science and art of Mars exploration to light for everyone here on Earth. All events are free with museum admission. Simulate the challenges faced by NASA scientists by designing a contraption to protect an egg when launched from heights of fifteen feet. Meet the author of the definitive book on mapping Mars?s fascinating terrain. Watch insect-like robots clamber over obstacles; marvel at a fire that burns without oxygen; cheer on robotic rovers made from LEGO?s, as well as their school-aged inventors, and cartoon your own version of Mars.
