From koopm at koopm.best.vwh.net Fri Dec 1 15:22:19 2006 From: koopm at koopm.best.vwh.net (Michael Koop) Date: Fri Dec 1 15:22:27 2006 Subject: [SJAA-announce] GM: Egyptian Eclipse and Holiday Celebration this Saturday Message-ID: <20061201162012.P20272@koopm.best.vwh.net> Everyone is invited to the San Jose Astronomical Association General Meeting and Holiday Celebration this Saturday, Dec. 2th in the Hall at Houge Park Starting at 8 PM. Shiloh Unruh will be making a presentation on his experience at the Egyptian Eclipse last March. After Shilohs presentation, we will be ringing in the holiday season with a Dessert Potluck. Come celebrate the upcoming longest night of the year! Bring your favorite dessert or appetizer to share. Last year we had many tasty "potluck" contributions. Contributions of food or drink are appreciated but not necessary. No alcohol, please. We will again be running the astronomically themed "white elephant" gift drawing. To participate, please anonymously wrap (no name tag) an astronomical item of small value and/or large humor and bring it along. It can be a used item you no longer want, an inexpensive new item, and can be either useful or funny. We'll do the exchange as a "draw or steal" lottery, which is always great fun. You never know what you may get! http://ephemeris.sjaa.net/0002/c1.jpg Also available at the meeting for sale will be the RASC Observer's Handbook and Astronomy Calendars for 2007. The cost is $17 for the Handbook and $10 for the Calendar. Not a cheaper price can be found anywhere! At the suggestion of SJAA Member Mark Wagner, we will be accepting contributions of food for the second harvest food bank in the spirit of the season. He expresses his feelings well here: http://observers.org/tac.mailing.list/2006/Dec/0023.html Most Needed Foods for The Second Harvest Food Drive: Powdered Milk / Peanut Butter / Canned Meats / Tuna / Cereal / Soups Meals in a Can (Stew or Chili) / Canned Fruits in Natural Juices Canned Foods with Pop Top Lids / 100% Fruit Juices I'll be dropping the food donations off into the collection barrels at my work. Happy Holidays to All! No background in math or science required! Transferable to both the California State University and the University of California systems. With its optional lab, the course also meets the Foothill College general education lab science requirement. As our knowledge of planets near and far expands, this is a perfect time to take a survey course about planetary astronomy. Astronomy 10A, is designed for "poets" and tourists, and uses real-life analogies, hundreds of the latest color images, and touches of humor to give a nontechnical overview of the other worlds our instruments are revealing to us, both in our home system and among the stars. The course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:25 pm (and during the day, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, from noon to 1:25 pm.) The instructor is Andrew Fraknoi, who specializes in explaining astronomy in everyday language, in his classes, in his books, and during his appearances on Bay Area radio.
