Subject: [BOARD] Telescope for auction?
Message-ID: <38ECF79F.43C5@sjpc.org>
Paul Barton called today. He has an 11 inch mostly-completed
telescope that he suggests should be sold at the auction. Perhaps the
loaner program could use it; he said that Mike Koop is aware of it.
The mirror is by Paul, polished and partly figured but not coated.
Paul said it did a decent job on the moon, but it could use a little
more work. It has a pipe mount with drive, but the clutch has too much
stiction and needs some clever rework to be really useful. The
secondary and spider are high quality. He said that he doesn't have much
money in it, and the club might get something for it, even if it's only
a hundred or so. Someone would need to pick it up with a truck or van,
due to its size.
Mike, can you tell us more?
He also has the club Comp-u-star C11, but isn't using it. This scope
has superb hand-picked optics, a year-2000 problem for which there is a
workaround, and some odd intermittent failure in the electronics that he
hasn't been able to find. Maybe someone should take it and try to
trouble-shoot the circuits.

Program Night at Focus
Program Title: "Adventures in Astro-photography"
Presenter: Joe Shrock
Date: Monday, April 10, 2000 Time: 7:45 PM
Location: San Carlos City Hall, 600 Elm Street, Room 207, San Carlos
This is a slide show of Joe Shrock's numerous trip all over the world
photographing astronomical events such as lunar and solar eclipses,
Halley's comet, etc. Along with showing his slides he will give
technical
pointers on taking such photographs. Some of his trips include Central
Java, Australian Outback, Borneo, Germany among others. This is a very
interesting program and should be a, "Don't Miss Event", for those
interested in astronomy.

Hi, Rich,
Good news! I'd very much intended to be there, but I will have
out-of-town guests May 10 - 22. So I'll pass the key to someone who
will open the building. I'd need to do that in any case, as there are
Houge events on May 12, later that same day, and the 20th.

We received a call from Jeff Moore (our excellent speaker a few months

Cave 10" equatorial mount, which he'd like to donate to the SJAA

Saturday, so he'd need someone to pick up the equipment before then.

Hi, All,
I see by the mailing label that our membership in the IDA expires this
month. Has it been renewed? $100. If not, I suggest that we can do so
by e-mail if every person will reply, or we can poll the Board at the
Auction.
It is presently addressed to Mark Taylor at the old CEO post office
box. Mark, if you'd like to continue picking it up, simply give the new
address. If you'd rather, have it sent to my address along with other
newsletters.

It was 8/28/99 that I last paid, but that was a WAY overdue bill
that had slipped through the cracks during transfer of treasurer
duties last year. I'm sure it's time again, so I'll get the bill
from JVN at the auction.

I vote to renew, of course.
Not only are we voting by email, but doing so WRT money. Even if
we refrain from voting (illegally) on money in this manner again,
at least we've set an important precedent about voting by email
and allowing a majority agreement to speak for the uncast votes.

Not so. Bill O'Shaughnessy and Gary Mitchell have not replied. So
what we must do is convene a short meeting at the Auction (it *is* a
meeting day, so no special notice is needed), and vote this in person.
BTW, Bill won't be there on Saturday.
Since we have not heard from all members, the vote by e-mail does not
count. Unless we get two more posts ... Gary? Bill?

Not so. The auction day does *not* include a scheduled board meeting,
and to be equally nitpicky about the letter of the law, we cannot
vote to spend one thin cent without an advertised, public board
meeting.
Sorry; can't have it both ways... We're either flexible about the

It seems to me that the Treasurer could act on his own authority in this
matter. If he later proves to have acted unwisely the board can take
whatever remedies it deems necessary but of course that won't be necessary
since the outcome of the official vote whenever it is taken is not in doubt.
Or better yet, BillO and Gary could reply.

The previous dues were authorized at the July 24 meeting, and the vote
was unanimous (JVN excused). So there is adequate history to justify the
treasurer acting on his own authority, with the presumption that we wish
to continue. Especially with the current count of 7 yes out of 7
replies.
I don't have a bill in hand -- only the March issue of their
newsletter, on which our expiry date is 04-2000. So just maybe we are
way ahead of ourselves? The newsletter is a quarterly, so if we wait
until May, we are still in no danger of missing an issue.
O-KAY -- now I'm squarely on both sides of the matter!

Message-ID: <38F6301E.3A87@sjpc.org>
Rich Neuschaefer has arranged a meeting at Houge Park on May 13, from
2 to 4 pm, to discuss the rules and procedures for use of Fremont Peak
State Park. Note that the 2 pm start was chosen defensively, in case the
child care program has the hall that day.
Representatives from SJAA, TAC, and other groups must be present, but
I don't know if we should flood the building.
Speakers are Lynne Rhodes, Ken Gray, Paula Peterson, Mary Pass, and
Cameron Bowers.
Topics include draft landscape plans for site improvements, park
partnerships, contractual relationships -- FPOA, Special Event group
use, and others.
This was mailed from the Peak. The envelope includes the memo that
Mark Wagner has already posted to TAC and SJAA lists; in particular, one
paragraph says that the park closes after sunset except for "Department
approved activities related to astronomy". "Exceptions to the Order
must be granted in writing through a Special Event Permit". This needs
clarification, and I hope that Ms.Pass will provide it.
I will have house guests at that time, so someone will need to take
the key.

Hi Jim,
Since Rich has taken the lead on this matter, and been the single point of
contact in arranging the meeting with the park people, perhaps he should
be conulted regarding additional attendees. I note he was not the
distribution list for this e-mail, which I am very sure was just an
oversight (I am copying him on this).
Thanks...

To the SJAA Board:
We don't want to overload the meeting. We must have a couple
SJAA boardies there, but not everyone. Please check with Rich if
you would like to go. Dave? How 'bout?

Board,
Someone came around during the auction with a flier for a community
meeting about Houge Park. We should surely have one or two people
attend this, and I think it would be in our best interest for SJAA
to have someone on the new "Committee" (mentioned in the flier text
below).
And while we're discussing that and who will attend, we should start
forming a complete list of topics to take with us. Such as:
* Getting storage space in the building (whether in a cabinet in
the open, or even in the back room)
* Getting the back room cleaned and kept up so that it's not a
safety hazard going in to switch the lights.
* Finding our where we stand with scheduling and who can/not
supercede our reservations.
I plan to attend, BUT having just joined a start-up I don't know my
schedule more than about one minute in advance... I PLAN to be there
tomorrow, but there are no guarantees.
Regards,
Mark

No doubt. I'll try to attend, and it would probably be a good idea if
Jim could as well. My schedule is also a bit shaky, but it looks okay
for now.

I'll try to be there. I have a CT scan around noon, but hopefully will
be in shape to be there (I have the men's room key). The poster says
"Houge Park meeting room" with no more directions. I called the phone
number just now but didn't get an answer. I presume it's in "our" hall?

Hi, All,
There were some donations to the Auction from John Hata. Who brought
them in? I ought to know, because I carried some of it from the other
hall, but I don't recall. It wasn't Paul Mancuso.
Deep Sky magazines sold for $10 total
Telescope Making, 6 issues, $35
Voyage thru the Universe books, $100
We need to send a thank-you.

Some you noticed the poster advertising a community meeting at Houge
Park tonight (Tuesday). Dave and I went, and it was soon obvious that
would have little or no impact on SJAA's activities, so Dave left.
I stayed to the end; Dave was (mostly) right. People are asking for
improved play equipment, shade (tree or shelter) near the play
equipment, better maintenance for the grass and trees, etc. etc. Nobody
asked for more lighting.
Present was the Dawn Wright, who is the Community Liaison in the
office of Council member John Diquisto. She mentioned that one of the
possibilities is to turn Houge into a community center. This brought me
out of my reverie, as people liked the idea of having after-school
activities, classes, etc. It appeared not very likely, as budget
considerations limit the number of employees for such things. If it
happens, we will have competition for the building.
Near the end, as they wrapped up now 90 minutes into a 1-hour meeting,
one woman said "I hope whatever is done doesn't stop the astrologers
from coming here." I was pointed out, and took about 1 minute to
describe how we use the building and grounds, and several asked how to
find the full schedule (even before I got to that). I gave the hot line
and web address. Thanks go to Morris for a rememberable address. Even
if we're not a net.
There is another meeting on May 1, on the other side of the park
(Jacksol Drive). I'll go to that if time and condition permit.
Condition??
I have mentioned to some of you that I'm in follow-up treatment after
removal of an cancerous polyp from my colon. It was contained, and of an
early type, so the prognosis is good; but to make it better, I'll be
undergoing a series of radiation treatments starting in late May.

Hi, All,
I need to pass the key to someone soon. I'll have out-of-town guests
May 10-22, so I'll be unavailable. I hope to keep up with e-mail. I'll
be at Houge tonight (Friday).
The Merc-News printed Apr.29 instead of 28 in Thursday's Venturing
section. The hotline and web page are in the paper, but there are
plenty of people who already know where the park is, so presumably we
should put in an appearance. I can go sit over there for a while on
Saturday in case anyone shows up. Anyone care to join me?
Regarding medical condition: C-T scan last week turned out normal. One
of the few times that I've been called that!

Yes. They didn't expect any down time, but I think there must be a
problem transferring the domain name or html; obviously the name made it
to the new server in Arizona, but it shows nothing.
I presume he know this because...
>>Does anyone know how to reach him?<<
No. He was going to email me with the vital statisctics when the phone
lines went in, and I'd guess this means there has been some delay. But
until he's hooked up, we'll hear nothing (unless he goes to an internet
cafe in, what was the place? Cochise or whatever... sure!)
