Hi, Dave and all, Your message went to the Board, but not the editor (Ephemeris@sjaa.net). I got tripped up on that, too. We got away with it for two years while Jane was on the board, and therefore on the board mailing list. Now that she's off the list, we boardies must be careful to ALSO include the Ephemeris when sending anything that the editor should see. The stuff to Ephemeris is automagically archived and more importantly, is seen by Mojo and Jane. If it's for publication, don't send it to Morris or Jane's address, but rather to Ephemeris. I have it in my material for the June calendar, and will include it when I send that out (real soon now). -- Jim Van Nuland, Secretary, San Jose Astronomical Association. The quick answer is that you should make the check payable to SJAA for the total amount of membership + S&T, and mail it with a membership form to the address given on the form. The membership form can be found on the back cover of the Ephemeris and also online under the membership link: http://www.seds.org/billa/sjaa/member.html If you use the Ephemeris, make sure to use a current issue because we just recently got a new mailing address. Perhaps we can find a way to better call out the instructions on the membership form, and also alert people to the fact that the form is also used for S&T subscriptions. Mike Here's a review of the book from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ts/book-reviews/0465090575 Book Description from Amazon: Will we walk on distant planets? Terrestrial problems may have regained center stage in our awareness, but the mythic and poetic possibilities unearthed by the space programs of the 20th century have changed us forever. Historian Wyn Wachhorst captures the essence of our birth as an interstellar species in The Dream of Spaceflight, a collection of five essays spanning 500 years of scientific and technological achievement. The marriage of curiosity and hard work that drove heroes like Johannes Kepler, Wernher von Braun, and the Apollo astronauts (one of whom, Buzz Aldrin, wrote the foreword to this collection) to conceive, develop, and implement the knowledge and machinery of space travel comes alive in Wachhorst's evocative prose. The subtitle of the second piece, "Nostalgia for a Bygone Future," speaks volumes about the thoughtfulness and creative energy the author devotes to his craft. Wachhorst knows why we cared so deeply about the space program during its heroic phase. And he explains our curious ambivalence now that human involvement is restricted to mission control and orbital flights perceived as not much different from extended plane rides. The reader comes away from The Dream of Spaceflight freshly inspired--if a few U.S. senators read this, NASA will get all the funding it needs. --Rob Lightner -------------------------------------------------------------------------- sjaaboard list: sjaaboard@sjaa.net Changes made only by list administrator: mojo@whiteoaks.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From north at znet.com Wed May 17 17:47:19 2000 From: north at znet.com (Dave North) Date: Sat Sep 30 03:57:06 2006 Subject: [BOARD] Possible Speaker for the SJAA General Meeting References: Message-ID: <39233D67.CC70307F@znet.com> >> I would like to invite him to speak to our club<< I haven't heard from him, so he probably got to you through Michael. Points in random order :-( .... They want to build a fairly large structure on the side of a hill on the edge of their campus. There's been some site surveying which sounded pretty good but only a little thinking about the structure itself. Jeff had a sketch which had a small observing room and a large classroom. Others at EVC are apparently pretty supportive of this project. They have some money and think they can get some more in the way of grants. We're talking $100- or $200,000. Could be a pretty fancy facility. Jeff himself seemed like a pretty cool guy. Maybe heavier on the theory than practice of astronomy (but that's were we come in :-) He also mentioned that he is a minister in addition to the EVC astronomy teacher. It's not clear what our role should be. I think his primary motivation for including us is to make it possible to get another category of grants from the State. But it's clear he needs some help with the practical side of astronomy. And I think it became clear to him that we could help. It would probably work out somehow for us to do some star parties in conjunction with his teaching. JVN: He also seemed eager to have us do one of our regular school star parties there as soon as possible. Mention was also made of holding SJAA meetings and/or in-town star parties at EVC. I think that would be a considerable improvement over Houge. It would be darker, a nicer facility and we would be able to store our stuff. It's not a centrally located but what the heck we would just get a slightly different set of locals. It will be farther for some (like me) and closer for others. Of course, we can also continue the Houge Friday parties, too, if we want to. They have an old C-8 and an old (but unused) C-14, a brand new ST-7E, and an H-alpha filter. And money for more :-) IMHO, this is a GREAT opportunity for SJAA. I think we should do what we can to make it happen. My greatest concern at this point is getting some SJAA people to become involved with this. But the two postings on our email list today are encouraging. (Unfortunately, I don't know the two posters: "Bob & Brenda Havner" and Michael D. Turner.) Sounds like it could be a good deal all 'round! I agree -- we should persue it. It's a bit farther to go for most of us (especially on a Friday night when there's traffic) but it would be great to have a darker site where we could store things (perhaps even the loaner scopes?) and schedule activities without worrying about being bumped out at the last minute, and we could give them a lot of help in setting up their observatory and making sure it was useful for their students. > My greatest concern at this point is getting some > SJAA people to become involved with this. But the two postings on our email > list today are encouraging. It might help to post a summary like the one you posted here; many people on the mailing list might not even know what's in the works. I'm definitely interested in helping -- I've been involved with several small college/public observatories here and in LA and have some opinions on some of what they've done right and wrong. What's the next step? Just make it clear to Jeff (which I guess you already did at the board meeting) that we're interested in proceeding, and then let him make his grant proposals and figure out what Evergreen wants to do next? ...Akkana -------------------------------------------------------------------------- sjaaboard list: sjaaboard@sjaa.net Changes made only by list administrator: mojo@whiteoaks.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From bartolij at pom-emh1.army.mil Fri May 26 10:43:26 2000 From: bartolij at pom-emh1.army.mil (Bartolini, Jim) Date: Sat Sep 30 03:57:06 2006 Subject: [BOARD] Evergreen observatory Message-ID: <9112B1E00AB4D311A9F3009027AF88B6ECFF3E@pom-emh1.army.mil> From: Bill Arnett >>My greatest concern at this point is getting some SJAA people to >>become involved with this.
