Dear Jim,
OK for July 19 from you. I'll now contact the maintenance people to try
to get some of the lights out at the place I'm planning to have the "star-show".
Also our college newspaper only runs from Sept. 1st to May 31st, so I'll
be contacting the local Evergreen newspaper and telling the other
faculty this week.

Yes, I did . These are good !
We will need a big open area to set up the scopes. At grade schools, we
use the main play area, and often the basketball courts. I'd rather not drive

Jim, could you meet me at the college this week, perhaps this Wednesday
, July 5th around 7:00 p.m. ? I'd like to show you in person the sites
I have in mind for July 19th and then have you select the best location.
> Go ahead and advertise it around campus.
I'll be sending out College - District -wide e-mail this week now that I
have an ok from you for July 19th.
Thanks Jim.

Good! Give 9:30 for the starting time, as that's when the sky will be
dark enough to start showing clusters, etc. If you have other
preliminary activities, plan on ending slightly before 9:30.
The 9:30 time is "nautical twilight", and it coincides nicely when we
can start showing things from a city site. We could show the brighter
double stars prior to that, but not by much.

I'd love to, but I can't -- I'm still tied down by a medical issue,
and hope that I'll be well enough to be there on the 19th.
BOARD: can someone fill in here? y'all know what we need for a school
event.
Once we have specific directions to the setup area, I'll send the
announcement to our usual list. A preliminary version of the
announcement is on my web page at www.svpal.org/~jvn/current.htm (or
will be later this evening).

Jim, some of us (Bill, Ak, and me) have already been out there; it's
already done. Don't worry about it.
The problem is, the best place to set up is not necessarily the easiest
place to get to, or for the public to find. They have an incredibly nice
soccer field that would be more than ideal, but it's kind of a walk from
the parking lots. We might be able to get permission to drive on
"walkways" to set up, but it would still be a problem from the public
point of view.
The other options are somewhat questionable for one reason or another;
primarily whether or not the incredible array of lights (the campus is
more brightly lit than some shopping centers) could be turned off.
I would be hard-pressed to decide. Do you think easier access more
important, or a better environment? Your experience would be helpful here.

Hi, Dave,
If the lights are illuminating the observing area, nobody can
dark-adapt. Since this star party has no big bright stuff, we must have
local darkness. Jeff said that he'd work on getting some of the lights
tuned off. The soccer field would be okay if not watered for a few days
preceding. If the lights can't be turned off in a more convenient
place, I'd go for the field. The students and faculty know where it is,
so I'm not tooo worried about the distance (unless it's a long city
block).

Dear Jim and all,
Perhaps our e-mail server was busy this week. I see this e-mail was
sent on July 3. I've checked my e-mail everyday since July 1st, and
Jim's e-mail just arrived this morning, July 6.
As far as a meeting location for the star-party,
The best location is the EVC North parking lot , close to the Cedro
building. None of the members of SJAA has seen this location on campus ,
Jim. That is why I thought it would be a good idea for you to see it
before July 19th.
The SJAA all parked in the EVC-South parking lots. These are accessible
from Yerba Buena Rd. But the EVC- North parking lot entrance (Parking
lots 1,2, and 3) is on San Felipe Rd, just north of Yerba Buena Rd.
I only showed the SJAA members two areas, (1) the darkest site on campus,
and (2) the location of the future EVC observatory.
If you or any of the SJAA members could meet me there on Sunday or
Monday night (or ....? night) please let me know . My home phone number
is :
(408) 554-1570.

Unless something remarkable happens, I don't expect to be there.
Though the radiation was complete on July 3, I'm still too sore and

Dave,
As you know, Fremont Peak has a program every weekend during the summer
except Full Moon weekends. Also, the SJAA has it's General Meeting on all
Full Moon weekends and the topic will be on The Full Moon Illusion: Why does
the moon look bigger on the horizon. Since I have the key, I am required to
attend the SJAA meeting as will most SJAA members. I will forward your
message onto the FPOA list. Maybe someone will be available. Also, if you
ask Ranger Cameron Bowers politely, he might put on a small program for you.
In the future, please observe the Astronomical Calendar more closely before
scheduling outings at Fremont Peak.
Last week, SJAA President Dave North ran the scope for a small group. It
would have been an excellent opportunity for your scout pack on a not too
busy weekend.
Good Luck,
Mike Koop
VP of SJAA

Mike, Dave and SJAA members,
I am aware that this is not a good weekend for astronomy at the Peak. Our
pack planned a day trip to the mission during planning last September. We
later (March) decided to have some people camp at Fremont Peak since it is
so close. If there was any possibility of a little astronomy, that's a
bonus. If not, no loss. We will discuss a true astronomy trip at this years
planning and coordinate with FPOA for an appropriate date.
Thanks for the prompt response on only two days notice. We appreciate the
terrific cooperation SJAA offers youth (and adult) groups in our community.
Clear Skies and a short meeting to all.
Best regards

The clouds came in around 10:50 p.m.
If this weather pattern is just a bit more forgiving on Wednesday, we'll
have a good hour and a half of clear skies.
Jim V. just informed me he'll be unable to come on Wednesday to EVC.
Are any SJAA board members coming? Mike Koop ?
I'm sure it'll be great.
There will be a yellow taped part of EVC North Parking lot #2 for Scope
toters.
I'll try to meet one of you (or someone I know ) at 8:00 p.m. to give you
the parking passes.
Can anyone get here (to the Evergreen College) by 8p.m. ?

I'm planning on being there. Getting there before 8pm shouldn't be a
problem.

Can you send out directions on how to get to the right parking lot?

Dave Smith has an interesting proposal to set up the large version of
the Milky Way Panorama at the
general meeting. What meeting would we like this to be
set up? The September slide and equipment night seems like a natural, but
maybe for the December Holiday Party/Social would work out better if we
do one.

Does it need ambient light? If so, a summer meeting would be better. If
not, winter is better.

I think either would work out well. And I do hope we do a holiday
party again! :-)

I am not sure just how much light it needs. It definitely works great out
of doors under an overhang, with no sunlight, or on a cloudy day. We also
had it set up in the shade of a tree, and the sunbeams which sometimes shone
through impaired the experience. At the last meeting, I had the impression
that the indoor lighting would be sufficient. I'll have to ask Irwin if he
has had it set up indoors.

Slide & equipment night makes the most sense to me: a lot of people
might be out of town for the holiday party (we had a fairly low turnout
last year, though those of us who showed up had fun). But either one
would be fine: I want to see it! :-)

I think it would be great fun at both Slide & Equipment and Party night.
But either is fine with me.
I mean, the more the merrier!
