I'll be plenty busy in October playing catch-up! QUESTION: will we have an astronomy class meeting in October? The September Ephemeris says to see the October issue. If so, someone please send the topic to Morris at . If NOT, the October issue probably ought to say "Class has ended for this year". QUESTION: will we have an astronomy class meeting in November? We have the hall reserved. If not, Morris, please delete the class entry for November. November 3 -f- Houge Park star party. Sset 5:15 pm, 49% moon sets 11:11 pm. 4 -s- Astronomy class? 11 -s- General Meeting: Sale Night. Swap meet, similar to the one in April. 10% commission on sales. 17 -f- Houge Park star party. As of this moment, we have nobody for November since Joe and Karen have to drop out (unless we want to try to get someone else to do it; I don't, really -- I'd rather wait until Joe can play ball). Turns out their house won't be done until later than expected, and they'll be moving about then, so it's got to be postponed again. I have been in contact with Kevin Zahnle (I think that's the correct spelling) but nothing is firmed up. If anyone has a better idea, or something hot in the fire, please say so. Rats, of course. MORRIS: do you have the projectors? I do NOT have the large screen here. Mike? Sorry, I've lost track of stuff. ALAN: below are the driving directions from the two freeways that run nearby. We'll have the building open early for a board meeting at 6:30, which is intended to close by 7:30 or not much earlier. Come in when you arrive, no need to wait for us to finish. The meeting starts at 8, with the usual short announcements, so you'll have the floor by 8:15 and can go as long as you feel is needed. We can also do a demo outside if the sky is clear. Houge Park is in San Jose, near Campbell and Los Gatos. From Hwy.17, take the Camden Avenue exit. Go east 4/10 mile, and turn right at the light, onto Bascom Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Woodard Road. At the first stop sign, turn right onto Twilight Drive. Go three blocks, cross Sunrise Drive, then turn left into the park. From Hwy.85, take the Bascom Avenue exit. Go north 0.2 miles, and turn right at the first traffic light, onto White Oaks Road. Run another 0.2 miles to the first stop sign, then turn left onto Twilight Drive. You will now be passing the park. Turn right at the first driveway, into the parking lot. The hall is at the end of the parking lot (south), with the door visible at the left end of the building. Thanks much!! -- Jim Van Nuland, Secretary, San Jose Astronomical Association. I look at these as being "common sense" things to do when hosting a large star party to avoid legal complications. Please feel free to add to the list. ) Mark, Sorry it took so long to get this to you. I have been preparing for a trip to Washington DC all weekend. Should be back on Thursday and I?m hoping to go to the star party. Here?s a few concerns for CalStar off the top of my head to brainstorm from: A) Ranger Contact We should be able to contact the ranger at any time in case of emergency (Fire, someone hurt). Cell phones might work if we have a phone number. The ranger should also have our cell phone number to contact us. Does the ranger have a Radio for us to use if cell phones do not work? Our group this year might not be large enough for this to happen, but ask. B) First Aid Kit The group is large enough that we might want to invest in a good first aid kit. Two things to have might be an allergic bee sting kit and some sort of tourniquet for rattlesnake bites. Of course, with the ranger near by, and a few doctors in the group, this may be redundant. C) Fire Extinguishers Even though the fire hazard is low, see if the ranger can provide some water fire extinguishers for corner areas of the camp. We have some smokers in the group. Fires are easy to put out when small. Gallon water jugs can be used in a pinch. D) Nearest Hospital Find out where the nearest hospitals are. E) Evacuation Routes Plan for the worst. Know the ways to get out of camp, most likely directed by ranger. F) Bulletin Board You might want to make a bulletin board with information on where people are going during the day. I.E. Mark W. and Rich N.are headed to Hurst Castle on Sat at 2PM, Jim B. is headed to the Mission at 1 PM ect. You also might want to post where to get food, supplies, camp rules, stuff from the website, places for people to leave messages ect . Please remember that the SJAA can help with any funds as needed. I may be out of email contact till Thursday. If there are any items you want me to take care of please leave a message at my work phone (408)473-6315 and I?ll try to take care of it. Cell phones do work there, and 911 gets phone calls to all necessary park staff. > B) First Aid Kit > The group is large enough that we might want to invest in a good first aid > kit. An e-mail was sent bcc'd to all who have signed up via e-mail (90 addresses). I am getting short on time. The others items are concerning saftey, which is certainly important. And if I post where I am, I lose my anonymity, which is important if this thing is a dud. But, the flyer handed out at the park entrance does contain info about food and supplies nearby. > Please remember that the SJAA can help with any funds as needed.
