No problem Jeffrey. We will put your presentation on the agenda. The board
meeting starts at 6:30, but if you like we can schedule you in last, so
show up promptly at 7:30 if your short on time.
Could you also make a short presentation (less than 5 minutes) at the
beginning of the general meeting at 8 PM on the latest developments?
Looking forward to seeing the progress,
Mike

Mike,
I'd be happy to make both presentations. And I'll invite the architect
Bill B. as well.

Hey All,
I've been thinking about Jeff's comment about "aligning" EVC and SJAA. The quarterly star parties of course are a great way. In addition I think that when the observatory is completed, there should be a weekly public observing night at the observatory. It could be jointly hosted by EVC & SJAA, something on the lines of the program at Foothill College using only one of the EVC telescopes. I'm sure there would be people interested in volunteering to run the program on a rotational basis (I certainly would). That way it wouldn't take away from the Houge Park parties. I think this could be a great opportunity for our club.
Anyway I thought I'd throw that out for consideration.
Be hearing from you
Bob

Hi, All,
The Houge park building and grounds have been reserved for July -
December 2001. To the previous schedule was added Nov.4 from noon to 11
pm.
I met Carolyn Johnson, the new person-in-charge. I'd talked to her on
the phone a few months ago. She seems very favorable toward our
activities.

Patty Winter, sometime SJAA member and co-editor of the Ephemeris, has
donated two boxes of old magazines. There are 141 issues of Sky &
Telescope, mostly 1980's; and 27 of several other titles. Also 3
tee-shirts with astronomical / space themes.
We can distribute these at schools, or sell at the November swap.

Message-ID:
The sprinklers came on at 11:15 at Houge Park again. Obviously, they are
set on standard time, which during the winter works out OK. We have a
problem during DST in that it only gets dark at 9:30ish which only leaves
about 2 hours of observing. Since we have the Mars opposition coming up, I
expect people to be out later than usual, maybe 2 AM depending on the
seeing. I am going to contact the person over at the Kirk center to see
what we can do. I would like to push for a kill switch that we can control
to guarantee that the sprinklers will not come on.
JVN, I will need the name of the new contact at the Kirk center with a
phone number. I have contacted the park maintenance folks last year but I
would like to go through the Kirk center first.

Board meeting 6:40 pm at Houge Park, May 5, 2001.
Attending: Mike K, Bill A, JVN, Gary M, Mark T, Bill O'Sh,
Jim B, Paul M, Bob H, also Steve N.
Minutes of April - misplaced by Recording Secretary! Fortunately, most
important board action on officers was recorded in SJAA Ephemeris.
Treasure Report, Gary
At mid March:
$7,339.09 checking
$2,750.75 CD
$ 391.91 savings
Unusually high telephone hotline bill of $26 and it usually is
$16. Discussion tracked it down to JVN outgoing modem use for
unusually high number of school star parties. Needed to keep JVN
house line clear for incoming calls from teacher and weather
adviser.
Discussion of SJAA Internet presence and desire of domain name
payment over a 9 year term. None had objection to treasure's
planned payment of $189 for this ongoing expense.
Membership report, Dave
296 total, 2 junior, 6 complementary (6 into 6th mo.)
200 is USPS bulk mailing minimum pieces. (reminder to board)
About half subscribe to Sky & Telescope magazine.
School Star Parties, JVN
27 total for this school year. 11 in March, 6 in April with 1
cloudy.
Most of these have been on the East Side. Strong PTA organizations
seem to request the most repeats. If an individual teacher is the
motivator, the event tends to move with the teacher, rather than stay
at the school.
Scouts and other groups are usually requested to go to Houge,
although there are exceptions.
Question from member about scouts and merit badges. SJAA has some
times gotten on a district or council merit badge list. JVN could
use a volunteer to assist in this (merit badge) task!
Talks, Bob H.
Future of the Solar System (similar to PAS) is planned for future.
NEW ITEMS
SJAA Auction discussion mainly completed on e-mail. Adding Swap
Meet
was interesting for people, even if it did not add much money. Two
hours is long enough for Auction (of about 60 items). Could use
"setup coordinator", tables around edge of room, underline of
item # (on tag), and highlight of 'Donated Item (100% to SJAA)".
Motion by ? Passed 8:1: "Cap of $500 per seller on the 10% club
commission."
Motion by ? Passed 9:0: " Swap on Nov 4, Sunday 1- 4 PM with
letters to be sent to Orion, Lumicon, Scope City."
AANC conference attended by Board members Mike K and Bob H. President
gave the 'official SJAA' talk and 2 handouts were distributed (SJAA
Auction and CalStar)
Evergreen Valley College - New Observatory $$ presentation.
Jeffrey Kirkbride brought an architecture model and the good
news that over $500,000 has been allocated - and equipment was
already coming in! Montgomery Hill Observatory would have a
TMB refractor in a dome, a roll off observatory with SC, 10 -10"
Dobs, lecture room/restroom, video feed to campus, etc. March 2002
ground breaking expected. SJAA help appreciated - hope to do more
together in the future. Construction may be complete August 2002.
- June 25th star party planned -
Adjourn 7:50
