Board ones,
RASC sent me a letter to remind us that it's ordering time again...
I'll bring the order forms to the meeting, but here's the scoop:
- 2002 Observer's Handbooks: $13.50 (in quantities of 20-99)
- 2002 Wall Calendars: $11 (5-9), $7 (10-24), $6.50 (25-99)
- Beginner's Observing Guides: $14 (1-9), $13 (10-24), $12 (25-49)
See you next week,
Mark
P.S. The APD ordering process is well under way; I'm awaiting a response
from "da man" that the data files are good, plus what the bulk pricing
will be (generally it's between 4 and 5 bucks). I told him we'd start
with 60 and order more if needed. Since we'll have them so early this
year we may actually run out!

And I still have 4 copies of the Beginners Guide from the last
buy...........
Shall we post to the Announce and TAC list asking for pre-orders or just buy
30 copies of the Observer's Guide
20 copies of the calendar
What did we do last year? I think we were a little short on the Observer's
Guide and the calendar.

Yeah, I didn't expect we'd be getting any of them.

Couldn't hurt to get a show of expectant hands as to who will come buy
them, but IME/O, the management of pre-orders and/or mailing of items to
people who don't/won't come out to Houge is a real pain in the asteroid. I
wouldn't guarantee held copies for anyone, but just use the poll to work
out the order size.

I think we did less than this last year, and you're correct -- it wasn't
enough.

If we need more volume, then it makes sense to stir up
more interest with a wider announcement. I understand the
problem with selling to people who don't show up to meetings,
that's something we'll have to decide.

I had hoped (and somewhat expected) that we'd have a social. The last two
were really well received, IMO.

I didn't care that much for the social meeting I went to. It's
too much like a regular meeting where the speaker didn't show up.
Most meetings have a social aspect to them anyway. So, personally,
I'd prefer a regular meeting.
If we decide on a social meeting, there should be something
astronomical planned. I hesitate to suggest a show & tell, since
we already do that, but something along those lines. We had a
pot-luck dinner once (that I know of), it was like a mini Star-B-
Que. Maybe another one of those?

I disagree: People don't typically bring foods and mystery gifts
to the regular meetings.

Outside activities are pretty well limited in December... If the cold
doesn't get you, the clouds probably will!

That's one aspect of the social. The gift exchange is fun, too, and
in previous years people were encouraged to bring in any astro equipment
or toys they wanted to share (and some did).
Maybe what we really need is to advertise it better and sooner, and
get even more people interested in participating and suggesting
activities to add to what we already have.

Also, everybody knows it's going to be a party ahead of time. Going
to a party is very different (to me) than going to a talk and having
the speaker not show up.
I've really enjoyed the year-end holiday parties the last couple of
years ... it's a fun thing for a club to do.
(But then, I've always been of the opinion that clubs should do
more communicating among members and less sitting in rows being
lectured to. Personal quirk, I guess.)

Here's the stuff for November. There are a few loose ends.
(1) Plan for Nov.4 swap meet. Time? Publicity?
(2) Decide whether to do Pot-luck on Dec.1. Is there a speaker
waiting in the wings? Are there cooks waiting in the wings?
(3) Shall we have a class November 23? October 26?
Speakers: October, Jeff Moore
November
3 -s- General Meeting, Robert Naeye/ASP on Chandra Observatory.
4 -S- Swap meet, Houge Park. Start time noon?
9 -f- Houge Park star party Sset 5:02 pm, 32% moon rises 1:19 am
10 -s- Fremont Peak star party Sset 5:00 pm, 21% moon rises 2:28 am.
17 -s- Coe and Peak star party Sset 4:55 pm, 10% moon sets 7:04 pm.
23 -f- Houge Park star party Sset 4:53 pm, 61% moon sets 0:45 am
23 -f- Astronomy Class XII??, 7:30 pm, hall, Houge Park
School star parties:
Sep. 23 -- Chinese Moon Festival, 1 to 5 pm
Oct. 16 -- Pending, SE San Jose
Oct. 19 -- Sunnyhills Park, Milpitas public star party
Oct. 23 -- Pending, W. San Jose
Oct. 24 -- Matsumo Elementary, E. San Jose
Oct. 25 -- Cedar Grove Elementary, E. San Jose
Oct. 26 -- School group at regular Houge Park star party
Oct. 31 -- Halloween. Set up at home, show off the full moon
Nov. 19 -- Pending, far E. San Jose
The school star party list is constantly updated. The current version
is on my web site, with the above summary at the bottom.

They're as good as in the airmail already! Wooohooo!
Time to start the marketing machine.
I'll get it going by sending a blurb to "ephemeris", putting a web page
together (for linking from the main site) and will send something to the
announce list.
Please, everyone, start talking about them at public events.
