Subject: [SJAABoard] Slides
Message-ID: <3C5A5AE5.1B63@aenet.net>
In the ASP catalog (available at the last meeting) there are
many slide sets. They have everything from planets to deep space
stuff, even multi-wavelength. They've even got one slide set on
just the Great Orion Nebula. Have you guys looked through the
list?
The SJAA education fund now has almost $1500, thanks to another
donation of $750 from the Andrah Foundation.
Since we have money for these things and since we hold astronomy
classes, we should seriously look through these and pick out some.
These would not only be good for our astronomy classes, but we
could show them during slide and equipment night or if we don't
have a speaker during a general meeting.
They've got a web site: http://www.astrosociety.org. (I just
tried it, hoping they'd have thumbnails of the slides, but the
site seems to be down at the moment.)
Each slide set comes with a detailed caption booklet with
background information.

Hi, All,
Just chatted with the fellow that schedules Houge Park.
There is a class/meeting in the hall that is expected to end by 7:15
to 7:30. We'll need to give them time to vacate, but it also means we
can't come early. After the first meeting we'll have a better
understanding.
There's no restrooms, no water. We'll need to bring a few containers
of our own, and some brooms. Also old newspaper to work on.
Clear Skies!

Hi, Tom,
Jane just pointed out that you are probably not on the SJAA board
mailing list. So here's the latest news regarding the hall. We will
not have conflicts on the other days, just on the 3 Thursdays. We'll
work with them to find the best way to do things.
Jane also suggests using a large plastic tub as a grinding station.
All the sludge stays in the tub, and it can be hosed out as needed.
This would contain the mess, otherwise we may have to mop the floor.
If you have something suitable, you might bring it along as a sample.

It'd be nice to have a few to hand out at the general meeting and
other public events -- say, 10? I know that they are brought to Orion
(excellent idea!), but how many are left over at the end of the cycle?

That varies. They try for overs, but if there's a problem in the folder

Bottom line is, there are usually quite a bit more than 10... but Lew

Message-ID: <3C742BAC.CF8F7CC7@znet.com>
There are currently 276 paying members, plus sixteen that get freebies
for a total of 292.
Of those, 11 have requested "electronic only" membership (not on the
mailing list) so the current mailing is 281 total.
Three were dropped this month for nonpayment since November. (Email bounced).
Approximately the same amount were added, for a roughly stable list.
Nothing much has changed for the last three months or so, but this does
represent a drop of about 60 since last March (we topped out at a total
of slightly over 350 -- the mailing numbers were smaller of course).
There are no obvious patterns, nor have any reasons been given for the
decline. Some people moved away, but only about 10, and there have been
quite a number of joins since then. I can't offer any obvious analysis.

Hi Robert,
The board discussed the issue last month. I was hoping to help encourage
both these speakers to speak at our club with free air travel. However,
the board was not interested in pursuing this since we have been getting
speakers from here in the bay area for free. Of course, we would love to
have them speak at a meeting and you are welcome to invite them. Our first
available speaker date is Aug 24. Currently, Oct 19 and Nov 16 are open
but we are currently working to get Brother Guy Consolmagno of the Vatican
Observatory on one of those two dates. (He's also the author of Left turn
at Orion and Brother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist)
See you tonight and we will talk some more about this.

OK, here's a plain text version with one typo fixed. Otherwise looks
good:
Minutes of the meeting of the SJAA Board of Directors
February 23, 2002
The meeting was called to order at 6:35pm in the meeting room at Houge
Park.
All directors were present except for Bob Havner, who arrived at 7:13pm.
OLD BUSINESS -
A. Treasurers Report: the Charity Status form has been sent in.
Our account balances are as follows:
$2,797.71 in the Money Market account;
$394.51 in the Savings Account;
$6,801.40 in the Checking Account (as of last month);
$1,473.00 in the Andrah Fund;
$784.28 in the Equipment Fund.
We have 18+ APD's left, plus perhaps a dozen Observer's Handbooks.
It was
decided to obtain 20 of each for next year (don't recall the status
of the calendars).
A number of slide sets were purchased with money from the Andrah
Fund.
A number of eyepieces for loaner scopes were obtained with money
from the
Equipment Fund.
B. Membership Report: we currently have 276 paying members, 16 Freebies
and 3
members dropped.
C. Loaner Scope Program Report: we have lots of loaner telescopes out at
the present
time. The mirror from the 13" Dob is being re-aluminized; it is
also getting a new
mirror cell and spider.
The Orion XT-8 Dob is turning out to be a very popular scope. It
was decided to
purchase another one, perhaps with proceeds from the sale of a
loaner scope at the
next Auction / Swap Meet.
D. Observational Astronomy Class Report: Mike gave a constellation
talk. He handed
out copies of the Evening Sky Map to the participants. Akkana
also gave a good
planetary talk. Mike obtained a slide-to-video transfer system so
that we could create
slides for future classes.
E. ATM Class Report: this was reported to be rather successful; there
were 25 attendees
on the first night. Currently 15 mirrors are being ground. Mike
is looking into obtaining
some material to put under the work areas to prevent ruining the
tables.
F. Houge Park Star Party: they were pretty much clouded / fogged out
on Feb. 22. Only
Jupiter and the Moon were visible.
G. General Meeting Programs: we have Ken Lum to speak at the July
meeting.
H. There are many more school star parties left in the season; 10
events are scheduled for
March; 3 for April.
I. Calendar: there is a Yosemite trip planned for the nights of July
5-6.
NEW BUSINESS -
*. Elections: there are 2 nominees for the board: Dave Smith and Steve
Nelson.
A. Auction: it will be held on April 28th. We will open the doors at
12 noon and begin the
auction at 1pm. We will be putting big-ticket items on the
website. There was a discussion
as to whether or not to put an item limit per person; some
suggested 5, others 10. I believe
it was resolved to be a discretionary matter left to JVN. The idea
is that those items that
don't sell at the auction would be available for sale at the Swap
Meet. Kevin Medlock will
be the auctioneer. We need to obtain equipment donations from
retailers and members.
B. New SJAA Star Parties: the annual Messier Marathon will be held at
Henry Coe SP on
March 16th. We will be handing out viewing lists. Bob Havner will
be sending out e-mails
as a last-minute announcement of the event.
C. SJAA Speakers: Mike suggested giving 1-year memberships to all
future speakers. This
was approved by the board. A desire was expressed to try to get
big-name speakers (e.g.
David Levy, James O'Meara); but -- from a budgetary perspective --
this may not be feasible.
D. Andrah Foundation: we discussed some of Mike's thoughts on how to
spend the money and
generally had positive reactions to all possibilities (see bottom
of last month's minutes).
F. Gregory Award: no news to report. It was suggested that past
Gregory Award winners
assist the Board in discussing / determining the next recipient.
The meeting adjourned at 7:55pm.

Since business was conducted at the General Meeting, it must be added
to the Minutes. The term "Annual Meeting" is a legal requirement.
ANNUAL MEETING, February 23, 2002
At the Annual Meeting, the membership elected the Board of Directors.
Candidates were David Smith and Steve Nelson (new), and Gary Mitchell
and Mike Koop (returning).
There were no nominations from the floor, so the slate was declared
elected by acclimation. They will serve two-year terms.
In addition, Jim Bartolini, Jim Van Nuland, Paul Mancuso, Bill
O'Shaughnessy, and Bob Havner all have an additional year to go.
As there was no other business presented, the business meeting was
closed, and the speaker took the floor.

I believe it only lets you produce a video of slides, it
doesn't actually create slides. (The idea being with a video
of the slides, we'd have a better handle on what we have.)

Subject: [SJAABoard] messier marathon star party
Message-ID:
I just wanted to say that I'm delighted to see us having a real dark sky
star party again, i.e., the Messier Marathon party. I'm sorry we couldn't
have gotten it into the Ephemeris.
I understand the circumstances, but I'm perpetually disappointed that
the SJAA isn't holding any dark sky star parties.
Basically we just need another Paul Barton to go with JVN. :)
Regards,
Mojo
