Message-ID: <3EB99823.6A78@svpal.org>
Hi, All,
Building 1 at Houge Park has been re-keyed, and the rules changed.
Some stuff has been stolen from the building, and they don't know who
all has a key.
I'll pick up the key on Friday afternoon, and it's gotta be returned
on Monday. Better than running to Kirk Community Center (the old way),
but not by much.
I asked him to work on finding a way to allow us to hold onto a (new)
key, and he said he would. I also suggested a drop-off box or slot, and
he agreed that's a good idea. Right now we're the only user that has
regular activities outside of daytime hours (when park staff opens up).
So we'll need to do some running at least for a while. I'll get it
for now, but I'll also be absent May 21 - June 17, so someone may need
to take it until we can convince the management that we should carry the
key.

Do they know what day the break in was?
This might clear or make us a prime suspect.
How can they be sure that it was someone with a key? It's too easy to
leave a door unlocked. We have had situations when we were there for the
star party, the janitors cleaned the room and they left one of the
double doors open which caused an alarm.
What was taken from the room? Are they sure it was after hours?

While Jim is willing to pick up the key for the next two weeks, I dont see
how it will work with Jim on Vacation. I do not have the time to go pick
up the key during the day.
We need to get a new copy ASAP.
What does Ray need to get
permission to get us a copy of the key? If it is a money issue, I'm sure
the board will approve the expendature of any money nessicary.

He didn't give details other than "radio and stuff". I didn't pump
him for more; he'd begun by apologizing for the trouble and stating that
he knew we were good guys who take good care of the place.
Their problem is that there are keys whose holders are unknown. Yes,
that's lousy record-keeping. The Red Cross had re-keyed the Los Gatos
building every year or so, at least once with 1 hour warning. This
isn't as bad.

I already asked him to work on this, and offered to pay a deposit. (I
did not bring up the fact that we have already paid $25 deposit for the
present key, and that it ought to be refunded or applied to a new key.)

I might be able to help with this.

An error:
June:
> 21 Deep sky weekend. Sunset 8:31 p.m., 27% Moon rises 3:21 a.m.
SHOULD be 45% moon rises 1:16 am.
Also at the bottom of July: add:
25-26 Friday - Saturday: SJAA weekend at Yosemite National Park.
The latter omission is my fault.

Not much to report this month. Numbers dropped to 333 total listed,
which is not statistically significant (down three).
Good, solid numbers. We're coming into the June Sky&Tel rush, so
anything is possible by this time next month.

Subject: [SJAABoard] Procedure for picking up Houge Park key; JVN absence
Message-ID: <3EC93953.4316@svpal.org>
Hi, All,
Dave Smith has offered to manage the Houge Park key while I'm in
Wisconsin May 21 - June 17. I'll send this to the list so that y'all
know the procedure. I will be running my usual e-mail addresses, but
will probably be slow to answer. I've taken care of the hotline, so
I'll switch it to a newer message by remote control.
Ray Hidalgo is the Houge Park Person,
phone 408-369-1850. He handles reservations and checking out the key.
When I returned the key earlier today, I told him that Dave will
be doing the key for the next month. He said that he expects that the
next pick-up will allow us to keep the key again! The bad news is
that the restrooms are still wrongly keyed.
In case he hasn't gotten permission to let us keep the key, in the
examples below I include the business of returning the key.
PROCEDURE:
Ray is not always in the office, so phone first. The office is in
Bldg.2 (the one with the restrooms). Take the sidewalk to the left
(east) of the buildings. Near the south end of Bldg.2, still on the
east wall, is a small door. Try it, but it's usually locked, so knock
on it. He or another staffer will let you in and sign out or return the
key.
WHEN?
We pick up the key on or the day before an event (class, ATM, star
party, or general meeting), and return it the following business day.
This means pick it up (say) for the Thursday ATM, hold it for the Friday
and/or Saturday events, return it the following Monday. He's pretty
liberal about it.
May
22 -Th- ATM Class at Houge Park. 7:30 pm
23 -Fr- Astronomy Class at Houge Park. 7:30, subject TBA
23 -Fr- Houge Park star party. Sset 8:16 pm, 39% moon rises 2:56 am.
Star party hours: 9:15 pm to midnight.
SO: pick up May 22, return May 26 if he's there, else 27th.
June
6 -Fr- Houge Park star party. Sset 8:25 pm, 43% moon sets 1:39 am.
Star party hours: 9:30 pm to midnight.
7 -Sa- ATM Class at Houge Park. 7:30 pm
SO: pick up June 6, return June 9.
14 -Sa- General Meeting at Houge Park:
SO: pick up June 13, return June 16.
I'll take it after that, if it's still necessary.
OPENING:
To open the building, use the key, enter and quickly stride across the
room to the fire extinguisher. The alarm will usually detect you. Open
the little white alarm panel by flipping down the front cover. Enter
the 5-digit security code. It should chirp and change the red light to
green. If not, after a few seconds, enter the code again. If the alarm
is beeping, go ahead and enter the code, that will turn it off.
You need the 5-digit code, but that should not be put it into a
plain-text e-mail.
For turning off the outside lights, someone must show you where and
how to override the timer (in the back room). You can't turn off the
lights until the timer has turned them on.
CLOSING:
Set the locks on both doors. On the control panel, enter # 2 (two
button presses) and the light changes from green to red. If not, a
door may be slightly open. After the indicator goes red, quickly turn
off the room lights, go out the door and push it shut. There is
enough time to cross the room, but it's quicker to use the back door.
I don't know if it's 15 or 30 seconds or more until it squawks.
Clear Skies!

I spoke with Ray Hidalgo by phone this afternoon.
He says that we can keep the key that Dave Smith picked up last Thursday.
Ray also informed me that he is still working on getting the bathroom key
replaced. I explained to him that we had about 100 people at Houge for the
Star Party on Friday and got some requests to open the bathroom. He also
informed me that Houge Park will have a "Teen Center" which will be open
on Friday nights. They are also having the same problems as us with the
bathrooms.

Hi Mike,
Will the "Teen Center" people be using Houge on different
Fridays than our star parties?
What parking lot will the Teen Center people be using?
Will we have a conflict with the parking lot and parking lot lights?
Thanks,
Rich

I think it will be open every Friday.
The center was open at the last star party.
They meet over in Building 2.
We had our Beginning Astro class in Building 1.
We did not even notice they were there.
The Star Party got fogged out
totally by 10 PM and we finally all left by 11 PM, they left before
that.

The director of the park knows we turn off the lights.
I don't know how many parking spots the Teen Center would take, but if you
were a teen with a car, would you go to Houge for ping pong or pool? I
suspect it is for local teens, most likely arriving by bicycle or foot.
We will see how the star parties work coexisting with the teen
center, but I don't see a problem yet.
Clear Skies,
Mike
