We've been talking for a long time about having an observatory of our own. For the most part, it wouldn't be much more than a paved place to set up our scopes far from city lights, but still within a couple of hours of San Jose. Assuming they get funding etc., if Group 70 would be willing to put this scope relatively nearby, maybe we should consider joining forces. Buildings requiring fire insurance would add to the costs. Of course that was just an estimate and they would have to review the specifics based on current market. Lease vs. Buy -- Did not matter since liability was the main component She indicated that Fencing might reduce the cost somewhat. Considering the size of the property I doubt that would be cost effective. In any event based on these numbers it would appear that insurance was not a major issue. The requirement of a $300 deposit for meals has been waived by Valley Catering as the SJAA is now a known good client. Two checks should be sent payable to Valley Catering for $125.00 each (total of $250.00), for transportation costs. These should be refundable in the event the SJAA cancels. Cancellation for Friday October 15 should be no later than Wednesday October 13. For Saturday October 16, no later than October 14. The letter used previously to detail the agreement with Valley Catering will need to be updated to reflect this year's agreement, and sent with the transportation checks. I will be contacting everyone that has registered by e-mail and detail the menu choices. I'll obtain from the attendees how many will participate in the catered dinners, and what their menu choices are. This will help Valley Catering plan appropriately. I am also requesting that everyone bring exact change to pay for their meals. I will be updating the CalStar web-site today to describe the meals and allow new registrants to make their meal choices during registrations. Meal prices are $16 for meat, $12 for vegetarian choices. Here are the meal choices: Friday Choice of Tri tip, boneless skinless chicken breast, or vegetarian lasagna Green Beans Rice Tossed green salad Garlic bread flavored mineral water or water Saturday Choice of Top sirloin, chicken marsala, or vegetarian pasta. Baby carrots Fresh fruit salad Cole slaw dinner rolls and butter patties flavored mineral water or water. I am not certain if I can attend or not. The SJAA will need two volunteers to handle payment for meals. One to check off names on the list (this assures those who "pre-ordered" meals get them before any extras are sold), and another to take money.
