To get the meeting presentation (~2.5 hours) to fit onto one DVD, I had to specify the lowest quality setting (I used Roxio), and even then it just barely fit onto a disk, without the footage of people milling around before and after. (Funny, the package of DVD blanks claims to pack 180 minutes on LP, and 240 minutes on EP.) For the subject matter involved, this setting actually looks pretty reasonable. The camera's scan beat against the projector's scan to make the brightness oscillate, which I could see while taping. It took about 3 hours for the computer to compress & burn all that data. After burning was underway, I realized I hadn't figured out how to add credits. Oh well. At least, I did manage to break it up into separate selectable scenes on the splash screen (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and recent), which play on through. I'll bring the master disk to the board meeting for critique. The individual 1-hour tape files are over 12 gigabytes each, so they won't fit onto a DVD. So if anyone wants to try to do better with the original data, it would require borrowing the tapes, or maybe making multivolume archives. Once a master edit is deemed acceptable, there remains the question of what to do about duplication. -- David Smith __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! One of the features is that PayPal will automatically handle renewals. http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/xcl/rec/subscr-intro-outside I am reading the manual in detail now. To prototype this I will need access to the club PayPal account. Please bring whatever login info to the Saturday board meeting. Here is some descriptive material from the manual PayPal Subscriptions and Recurring Payments is a tool that will let you accept recurring payments for your service. When you set up Subscriptions, you can offer your subscribers a trial period, special introductory rates, and a regular rate. Your subscribers will be billed automatically according to the terms you dictate, removing the hassle of keeping track of which payments you have and have not received. Recurring Basis Select "Yes" if you would like your subscribers to be billed on a recurring basis. This means that after the regular billing cycle that you previously entered is complete, your subscribers' subscriptions will be automatically renewed unless a subscriber manually cancels his subscription. If you select "No," your subscriber's subscriptions and payments will end after the first cycle is completed. Step 5: Create a Cancel Subscription Button If you are going to be using PayPal Subscriptions on your website, you can let your subscribers cancel their subscriptions from your website. Choose an image for a Cancel Subscription button you would like your customers to press to cancel their subscriptions. To display your own image, enter the URL of the image's location in the URL field. A link that you can send to your subscribers who wish to cancel will also be created. It is going to take some fiddling, but that is fine by me. One caveat is that tax season is almost upon us. These may be held in town at the school or at a nearby park. The club is always looking for volunteers for this outreach program. Jim Van Nuland is the club organizer for our School Star Party program. If you are interested then let Jim know and he will put your name on the mail list. One to two weeks before the school event, Jim will send out a detailed description and driving directions to the school. Plan to arrive early enough to be set up by the specified starting time. If you don't see the setup area, walk around to the back and look for Jim's white VW Vanagon with the outsize CB antenna on top. Other than seeing that everybody isn't on the same object, Jim doesn't dictate what object each person should show. Typically, we'll use the driven scopes on planets, where high power is needed, and the undriven ones on low-power objects. Often we'll put one of each on the moon, to give an overall view and also a high-power one. Faint objects are not appropriate for beginners, so we show mostly bright stuff. Our official guideline is that kids should be at about 3rd grade, but at most events, we'll have a number of younger ones -- parents bring the older ones, but the younger ones can't be left behind. They might get something out of it, so we don't discourage them. Some are pretty sharp! Even with older kids, you should bring a stepladder. A ladder is far better than a short stool, as it provides somewhere for the kids to hang onto. Kids (and adults!) are rather wobbly standing on a box or stool, especially in the dark! And adults might need something to lean on to get down to the eyepiece (myself, for instance). On the day of the event, Jim will contact the teacher about noon, for a final readiness check and to discuss the weather. If we must cancel, this gives her time to make an announcement at the school. In any case, by about 1 pm he will post to the list with the decision, and will also change the top line on the Current Events web page. If you don't have e-mail access during the day, let Jim know and he will phone you. In any case, you may call Jim at home, (408) 371-1307, to check on status. Please do not come to the school without checking! We can have cancellations on perfectly clear days. In some cases, our star party is part of a larger event such as a science night. In some of these cases, even when the weather is near-hopeless, a few of us will go to the school anyway, and set up an indoor demonstration. This will be indicated in the Noon Note. You may like to come around to the Public Star Parties at Houge to learn what it's like, before committing to a school event. There is a calendar for upcoming School Star Parties here . Please contact Jim Van Nuland for more information. Rob Hawley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Different telescopes have different advantages and disadvantages. There are hundreds of sources offering advice on how to select a telescope (including this document). Ultimately the correct choice rests on you and your interests. SJAA recognizes that dilemma by offering a number of different kinds and sizes of scopes that you can borrow. Some folks join SJAA for just this benefit. The inventory is constantly changing. Here are pictures of most of the scopes available for loan. If you would like to borrow a scope then check the most recent copy of the Ephemeris. This lists which scopes are available now and which are on loan. Contact Mike Koop by email or using the phone numbers in the Ephemeris. Generally you will receive the scope at a club event at Houge Park. The initial loan is for 3 months. You can arraign with Mike to extend this period as long as no one is waiting for the scope. See the further discussion in Your First Telescope for some more reasons why you should consider taking advantage of the Scope Loaner Program. How about we omit that last sentence. Also, perhaps the ending of the next to last sentence could read: "...scopes that members can borrow at no cost." Just a suggestion. Rob Hawley -----Original Message----- From: webmaster@earthlink.net [mailto:webmaster@earthlink.net] Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2005 6:20 AM To: robhawley@earthlink.net Subject: EarthLink Web Site Traffic Limit Dear EarthLink Member, Your free member Web site http://home.earthlink.net/~robhawley has been popular this month -- maybe a little too popular. According to our records, your Web site has exceeded 75% of your traffic allotment this month. If your free Web site traffic exceeds 1024 MB, the site will become unavailable until the beginning of the next month. During that time, no one will be able to access your site and you will have only limited abilities to publish to or modify the site's contents. WHY? We have determined that 1024 MB of traffic is more than enough for the vast majority of personal Web sites. Typically, traffic beyond that is only generated on commercial sites. And this policy ensures that we share our bandwidth evenly among all our members. Overtaxing resources could compromise other members' access to the Internet. WHAT YOU CAN DO Since traffic is calculated by multiplying the size of your files by the number of times a visitor loads them*, you can slow down your traffic accumulation by making sure all your files are as small as possible. Remove or reduce any excessively large files (like large images). (Converting your images with only a few colors -- such as logos -- to GIF files, and converting photos to JPEGs usually reduces them. Use a program to optimize your images. GIFWorks is a free online tool you can use: http://www.gifworks.com/). WHAT NEXT? If you exceed 100% of your monthly allotment, you will receive another email notice. At that point, your site will become temporarily unavailable. To check your Web site's traffic status anytime, visit: http://home.earthlink.net/cgi-bin/webquota Enter your email address and click "Submit." You will automatically be emailed a report on your site's traffic and disk space limits. And for more information on how to reduce the size of your site and handle traffic, check out our Web Site FAQ: http://www.earthlink.net/internet/faq/using.html If you have any questions, please reply to this email. Sincerely, The EarthLink Webmaster webmaster@earthlink.net * For example, if you had a 50K file that was viewed 100 times, that would generate 5000K, or about 5MB of traffic. Some explanation may be that the “spike” of memberships received during last year’s Mars opposition are expiring, but there are also many of our friends’ memberships expiring. Discussed “option” for multi-year membership. Rob to determine if Paypal lets us change the fee structure as necessary without excessive effort. [Suggestion after meeting] +Rob, can you follow up with a few people whose memberships have expired? You could ask if there’s anything we could have done to keep their membership, or if it’s due to factors beyond our control. --------------------------- Loaner Scope Program Report --------------------------- Three returns. No further status to report on. ------------------------------------ Observational Astronomy Class Report ------------------------------------ February 4th - Jay Freeman - Binocular class highly recommended! March 18th – Dave North – Observing the Moon April 1st – Akana Peck – Observing the Planets ------------------------ General Meeting Programs ------------------------ We are booked through May. We still need someone to take over this responsibility from Bob Havner who is stepping down from the board. Bob has access to many resources and can provide “tips” for getting started. --------------------- Observatory Committee --------------------- No updates. --------------------- Houge Park Star Party --------------------- Cancellation policy – general rule is event continues as planned unless there is rain hitting the ground. ------------------------ School Star Party Report ------------------------ Jim and Gary are stalwarts. Ralph Libby has also been putting in an impressive amount of effort to assist with these events. ------------------------------- Upcoming Board Member Elections ------------------------------- Board member elections this February. There are several board members’ whose terms are expiring as well as a vacancy that needs to be filled. If any SJAA members are interested in joining the board, don’t hesitate to ask us if you’d like to learn more about the positions and what they entail. -------------- Comet Machholz -------------- There has been surprisingly little public attention to this naked eye comet, which brings up the topic of how we promote SJAA activities. Rob Hawley has been trying various methods to increase publicity, including www.craigslist.com and the Mercury News. ----------------------------- November 2005 Mars Opposition ----------------------------- Event ideas discussed – Evergreen College, let them help promote the event, worked well last year, great opportunity to get new members. Could invite Steve Squires to give talk in the college’s auditorium. --------- Club Logo --------- No updates. +Gary and Craig to bring “draft” ideas to the next meeting. --------------------- SJAA Web Site Hosting --------------------- In a previous meeting we discussed providing ~$200 to Morris Jones (Mojo) who gratefully hosts the SJAA web site. +First: Gary to look in check register to see when/if/how much payment may have been provided and email to this list. +Second: depending on what Gary finds, Gary will ask Mojo to estimate the value of the services he provides to us and let us either provide payment or provide him a receipt he can use for a tax deduction, his choice. ------- Calstar ------- AANC offered to provide some $help to SJAA if needed. The board discussed the cost structure of Calstar and determined that we could use help with the catering “travel cost” for the three days – the first day’s $125 “travel cost” could be covered by the SJAA, the second day’s $125 could be covered by the AANC and the third day’s $125 is already covered by the extra $1 added to the registration cost. +Craig to bring this up at AANC mtg this sunday. [Done, AANC approved the $125 and would like to be listed as a sponsor] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Clear Skies! -- Jim Van Nuland, San Jose (California) Astronomical Association JVN's web site From wb6yru at aenet.net Fri Jan 28 19:46:50 2005 From: wb6yru at aenet.net (Gary Mitchell) Date: Sat Sep 30 03:57:26 2006 Subject: [SJAABoard] SJAA - Group 70 joint site Message-ID: <41FB072A.8070504@aenet.net> In our on-going discussions about getting some land for our own observing site, it was mentioned that perhaps we could go in jointly with Group 70. Group 70 had their meeting Thursday. I brought up the possibility and they thought it might be a good idea. We share most of the same goals. They aren't too picky, but would prefer a location near the coast to take advantage of the smoother laminar flow from the ocean. I mentioned what our interest is in buying a dark site (have to be within a couple of hours drive, have a big enough area to set up scopes, etc.) and they didn't have a problem with any of that. They would like to have the site available to the public too (something like FPOA's public program, but perhaps less intensive). Security of the building is a concern. They plan to have a pretty good size building... it would have to be to house a 70" scope. They even talked about the possibility of having the ability to re-aluminize the main mirror on site. They currently don't have money to buy land, they just came up with the funds to build the mirror cell (about $7500). They seem to have better fund-raising ability than we do. They recently moved out of the workshop that they had--which was soaking up $1000/month! The main mirror is pretty much done (about 1/3 wave) and their stuff is in storage now at another workshop. They are moving into the next stage--hardware and iron work. We're talking about having a *real* observatory here, not just a concrete pad. Of course, it wouldn't be all ours, but that can be a good thing, (spread out the costs etc.). So, what does the board think? Is this something we might like to pursue? Exactly who would pay for what is yet to be determined, but we could at least buy the land. I guestimate we're looking at something around $2000+ per acre for an unimproved 5 acre lot of remote mountain land. That's within our grasp. Gary
