It can be found at: http://ephemeris.sjaa.net/0601/EphJan06.pdf While we run the risk of giving too much information: * The article on the next Silicon Valley lecture is based on the phone message that Andy Fraknoi has set up but we expect an e-mail with more info shortly. * The NASA article on page 5 will be replaced with a NASA "Space Place" article if it gets here in time. * And did you know that the Adobe Acrobat version of the newsletter that you proofread becomes the version that the printer uses?! * Last week we got an e-mail from a reader in the Czech Republic wanting permission to use a photo they saw in the Ephemeris. Turns out, it was a NASA photo but we accepted the compliment and pointed them in the right direction. Thank you. As always, all comments welcome. It looks like we can save some money by prepaying the fee. BAY-VALLEY DISTRICT United States Postal Service December 7, 2005 Dear Postal Customer, On November 14, 2005 the Governors of the U.S. Postal Service accepted the Postal Rate Commission's recommendation to raise most postage rates and fees by approximately 5.4 percent. The Board of Governors of the Postal Service set January 8, 2006, as the effective date for the changes. The increase in domestic postal rates and fees is to fulfill the requirement imposed by Public Law 108-18 which requires the Postal Service to establish a $3.1 billion escrow account. Without this requirement, no rate increase would have been proposed. Among the rate adjustments, the single-piece rate for First-Class Mail will increase from 37 cents to 39 cents, and the postcard rate will increase by one cent to 24 cents. Any customer/permit holder renewing annual fee(s) before January 8, 2006, pays the current amount (e.g., $150, $475). Until January 8, 2006, if the fee(s) is paid (received) before January 8, the current amount (e.g., $150, $475) is due. If payment is received January 8 or later however (regardless of any postmark for mailed payments), the customer/permit holder pays the new amount (e.g., $160, $500). Additional information on the new prices can be found online at usps.com/ratecasel or by calling 800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777). Should you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact your local BME and/or Mailing Requirements Office. Thank you and we appreciate your business. . No doubt the bulk mail postage itself will increase, again. Why couldn't they make first class an even 40 cents, instead of 39, and then hold off a little longer on the next increase? It continues to be a light year in terms of the number of people that are taking advantage of this program. Gary?s ready to put #43 into service after repairing the base. ------------------------------------------- Observational Astronomy Class Report (Mike) ------------------------------------------- Rob is confirming that he can do a basic (care and feeding) dobsonian skills class on January 20 and something about this will appear in the next ephemeris (submitted by Dec 10). November 25th will be a what?s up in the sky talk. ---------------- ATM Class (Mike) ---------------- SJAA sold glass blanks and mirror making supplies to John Dobson?s class up in San Francisco for around $405, though only $360 has been collected so far. Mike will be working with Ken Frank to resolve the discrepancy. ------------------------------- General Meeting Programs (Dave) ------------------------------- Paul Zurakowski agreed to do a meeting, a talk on mirror testing. Richard Ozer will share the time with him talking about the Chabot workshop (March talk). January slot is still open. Eleanor Gates has been contacted for suggestions about future programs. Jeff Moore is scheduled for February. April will be the auction. We may have an eclipse meeting after this as well. Mike is ordering the Axel Messinger book for us to sell in the December meeting for $35-$40. To handle the December planetarium meeting Dave will purchase colored cards so that we can let in people in small groups at a time to the planetarium. --------------------------- Observatory Committee --------------------------- No updates. Craig still needs to get in touch with Kevin Baumgardner who is a realtor and an amateur astronomer. ---------------------------- Star Party Updates ---------------------------- Weather has been an issue for the Houge park parties. The cancellation criteria were discussed. Based on the discussion there is an unresolved difference of opinion between the notion that we should require an SJAA representative (the leader/coordinator) to show up for Houge park parties regardless of weather versus ?cloud-out? or ?rain drops? conditions not being worth a volunteer?s time to drive over to clouds/rain and/or only a couple people knowing that some holes may or may not appear. Janitor?s service appears to have stopped. We?re not sure how this will be taken care of. We have a new contact at the park who handles the sprinklers and Jim and Mike will get in touch with him to ensure the sprinklers do not come on during our scheduled events. We?re working with a new person at the Kirk center to ensure we have continued access to the Houge park building where we hold events. Rob reported success with the Mercury News for two items based on his technique of sending in individual requests. Time permitting, Rob will pursue the idea of putting a CGI counter or otherwise having a way to track the number of people visiting the ?gotstars? site. ------------------------------ School Star Party Report (Jim) ------------------------------ 5 in a row, 2 cancelled. Partly clouded on two others, one good one. 3 more in Nov, 5 in Dec, Jan is light (5), Feb will have 5, Mar has 6 (one scheduled a year in advance by Briarwood), also scheduled for the Tech Museum. Jim is negotiating parking for the Tech Museum adjacent to the building. 52 attempts at the school parties this year. 70 last year. Very successful program. -------------- Calendar (Jim) -------------- Many upcoming events, ATM class, Houge park star parties, etc. --------------------- AANC Meeting (Mike) --------------------- Lots of turnover there. We got the $400 check back. AANC decided to keep the profits from the Astrocon event as seed money for future Astrocon?s. Astrocon was a very successful event. The John Dobson pins are still being sold. --------------------- Fall Swap Tomorrow (Gary, Nov 13) --------------------- We should come at 12 tomorrow to provide armpower for getting the event set up and bring any cloths or tarps for covering up the ping pong tables. --------- Club Logo --------- We will put the logos in the Ephemeris and ask people to vote. On the online membership page Rob is going to add some verbiage describing that this page can be used for both new memberships and renewals. ---------------------------------- Loaner Scope Program Report (Mike) ---------------------------------- Several scopes have recently been returned. It continues to be a light year in terms of the number of people that are taking advantage of this program. ------------------------------------------- Observational Astronomy Class Report (Mike) ------------------------------------------- Mike did last class on preparing to observe and what to bring. Also did what?s up in the sky report. No class this month because it would fall on the 23rd of the month. ---------------- ATM Class (Mike) ---------------- Gary is almost done with his mirror. Mike talked about creating a robo webcam Foucault tester. Mike turned out the lights at the last event to allow one person to observe. A policeman stopped by just as Mike was turning the lights back on, because people are not allowed in the park one hour after sunset. The discussion outcome was that we would only turn out the lights when there are several (at least 3) people outside to discourage unlawful acts and provide some supervision. Also, the next time Mike sees the local policeman he will give him a copy of our calendar of events. ------------------------------- General Meeting Programs (Mike) ------------------------------- Bob Garfinkel is doing January Jeff Moore is doing February Paul Zurakowski from Chabot may do the March program --------------------------- Observatory Committee --------------------------- At the end of the board meeting Bob Ayers approached the board to discuss the idea of donating his 40 acres of land to the club with an agreement that he could retain his 20 foot storage container on the property. The land is located in Willow Springs less than 2 hours drive away and has good access via a gravel road. His contact information is astroayers@gmail.com ---------------------------- Star Party Updates ---------------------------- A substantial number of people who attend Houge park star parties learned about the event from the Mercury news. The building at Houge park continues to be available for next year. Mike was told that the club should continue using the same facility until being told otherwise. It was decided that we should identify ?back up? locations in case we were to lose access to Houge park or if we wanted to have 3rd quarter moon star parties from some a location with less light pollution. Rob has received a confirmation for next year?s Calstar event. -------------- Calendar (Mike) -------------- Mike talked about providing a format that people could download into Outlook or their PDA. --------------------- AANC Meeting (Mike) --------------------- Not much to report. Minutes are posted on the AANC web site. --------------------- Fall Swap (Gary) --------------------- The event seemed to go fairly smoothly. There were not enough people supporting the event, it was only Mike and Gary. 3 dedicated people would be much better. More than 100 people showed up to the event. It's going to be converted into a 1 year CD. This was the original plan. With them staggered like this, we'll get the interest of 1 year CDs, but the access of 6 month CDs. If we get more money in the checking account, we can buy another 1 year CD, but with it staggered on a quarterly basis.
