About the Program
Mission Statement
1) To
provide a reasonable selection of
telescopes for members to borrow that are appropriate for those
relatively new to astronomy. The target members are primarily
those who don't own a scope, especially newer members, so they may get
started without first having to spend hundreds of dollars.
2) To provide a small but reasonable
variety of telescopes for members to borrow who may already own one
type of scope, but want to become acquainted with different types of
scopes without having to buy them first.
3) To provide a small but reasonable
variety of telescopes for members to borrow who occasionally have a
need for a type of scope that they don't own, but may not use often
enough to justify purchasing it.
4) Each loanee is encouraged to
participate in one Houge star party.
5) The board reserves the right to
further define the goals and procedures of the program.
The loaner program is intended to give SJAA members a chance to try
out various technologies and sizes of scopes. The program
contains small, simple scopes intended for beginners
as well as larger intermediate/advanced scopes. Current membership in SJAA is
required during the period of the loan. This program is not
intended to replace members owning their own scopes.
Please read the loaner program
contract. Scope loans are normally for three months. After
that time we
would
prefer to give another member a chance to try out the scope. You
may keep the scope until a member asks for it as long as your
membership is current. You must
return the scope within 30 days if your membership lapses.
To request a scope contact the loaner program.
For
information
or to request a loan please contact loaner@sjaa.net.
Most scopes are stored by the last
member that borrowed the scope. Once we receive your request we will
get in contact with that member to arraign for a transfer. Note that
this may take a couple of weeks since we have to coordinate your, the
other member's, and the loaner program's schedules.
What Scope Should I Borrow
If you a beginner thinking about borrowing a scope from the club you
should take a look at this expanded version of my
