The type of mirror shape Rob mentioned is common
in Schmidt-Cass designs such as Meade and Celestron.
The shape of the back has not much to do with the
figure on the front for small size mirrors. This
is why 8", 10", 12" SC typically focus by moving
the primary (supported in the center only). [I know
you all know this]
Some people have make mirrors from SC style
blanks without a center hole. This type of blank
can still be bought from Newport Glass and others.
I would agree with Lee. If Gary gets the mirror
he can test the figure after the coating is stripped.

PS. "small size mirrors" I worked for 2 years with
a 60" telescope at UCSD (Mt. Lemmon) that was
an extreme example of this type of blank-support.
The astronomers and I never had any complaints
about astigmatism. It was "center only" support.
