DSSH Winter 2015
Evenings of January 16 and 17
Registration is full and now closed
Please don’t show up at Mendoza Ranch unless you’ve previously registered. There is limited space, and there will be a check-in table both nights. If you weren’t able to register, consider downloading the lists and heading over to Hunting Hollow. Thanks!
The SJAA Observers group will be hosting the SJAA Winter Deep Sky Scavenger Hunt on Friday January 16, 7pm-11pm and Saturday January 17, 6pm-12 midnight at Mendoza Ranch. We will also have backup dates of February 13 and 14 in case bad weather cancels the January dates.
This is a deep sky observing event for the SJAA community. The Winter DSSH is a challenge to learn or fine tune your star hopping skills for observing the upcoming Winter and Spring skies.
In this challenge, you can choose from three different levels of difficulty: beginner, intermediate and advanced. For each level, we will provide a list of 30 deep sky objects to find during the evening. The Friday night session will be a warm up, with deep sky coaches available to teach and guide you in learning how to star hop and find objects. Green laser will be permitted on Friday. The Saturday session will be when you test your skills in finding the objects on your list. No green lasers permitted on Saturday!
The first to find all 30 objects on their list gets to shout out that they’ve completed the challenge! But this event has dual and equal goals: To learn and to have fun.
Sign ups for the event are now closed. Please consider using Hunting Hollow as overflow.
The observing lists are now available here (zip file, 2.3MB):
Observing List – Winter 2015
Event organized by Ed Wong
This is an active observing event, which means you will need to bring your own telescope to use. Note: this is NOT a public outreach, share-the-views-with-passersby event. If you are interested in more non-public SJAA observing events such as private viewing opportunities at RCDO, Mendoza Ranch and other locations, please join the SJAA Observers group.
Note that future non public observing events will be posted in this group only. SJAA Public outreach star parties will continue to be announced on SJAA Announce mailing list.
