SJAA Imaging 3/19/24: The Jupiter Deflection project

The Jupiter Deflection project — measuring, together, what can’t be seen
Francesco Meschia

Hear about SJAA members’ involvement in the Jupiter Deflection project led by Dr. Don Bruns. Learn about a unique opportunity, foreseen by Albert Einstein, to verify general relativity’s predictions using Jupiter’s gravity. Francesco will talk about the subtleties of measuring angular separations to within a few thousandths of an arcsecond, the challenges in reducing tens of thousands of data points, and how collaboration with other astronomers made the problem more tractable. Finally, we’ll review the preliminary results and talk about future opportunities.

************************* This is an online event *************************

The Imaging SIG meets roughly every month Online to discuss topics about imaging. The SIG is open to people with absolutely no experience but want to learn what it’s all about, but experienced imagers are also more than welcome, indeed, encouraged to participate.
