The SJAA is launching a welcoming way to help members connect: a bimonthly New Members Night. These gatherings make it easier to find like‑minded people, swap observing tips, and discover ways to get involved.
The sessions are hosted by our new volunteer coordinator alongside program leads from observing nights, outreach, imaging, and education. Expect a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere with short introductions to the club’s activities, quick demos of how to join observing groups or volunteer, and small‑group conversations so people can actually meet others who share their interests — whether that’s planetary imaging, backyard visual observing, or public outreach.
Why come?
- Connect: Meet members with similar observing goals and experience levels.
- Learn: Hear about upcoming events, observing programs, and how to borrow or get help with gear.
- Get involved: Find volunteer opportunities or special-interest subgroups that match your skills and availability.
- Food: There might be free food!
New Members Night is intentionally for members that have joined up in the last 6 months or so. Board members and program leads will be on hand to answer questions and help make introductions.
If you have recently joined the SJAA, watch your email for the next date — as a hint, it’s coming soon in late April or early May. If you’re interested in deepening your involvement or simply want to hang out with other astronomy enthusiasts, don’t miss it.
